Saturday Planning

Here’s what I’m working on this week:

Theory:

Systematic Programming I (and II if I can make time)

Algorithmic Toolbox

Language:

I’m going to hold off on language courses this week and focus on good programming methods with JS.

Projects:

  • Random Quote Machine
  • (maybe) budget App

Here’s how I did last week:

Book:

Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software – Erich Gamma, John Vlissides, Ralph Johnson, Richard Helm

I realized a few chapters in to this, and in the later sections of the budget app project, that I wasn’t getting any better at breaking problems down. It was a real sticking point for me, and something I knew would make everything easier. I picked up the course from the section above, and while I find some of the earlier bits tedious, it has offered me the pieces I felt I was missing.

Code:

  • JavaScript Tutorials 2 and 3
  • Wrapping up intro to React JS

Same as above, I realized I was moving forward with a skillset that I couldn’t use properly. I also switched code camp apps as the skills I was looking for weren’t offered at the level I needed.

Projects:

  • Budget App project (finish)
  • Portfolio page

Coding challenge goal: 8 << Nailed it!

I also took some time (a morning) to sketch an outline of a course path. Now that I’ve added some skills, I can better conceptualize the see-saw nature of the learning path. (Language / Theory / Language / Theory.) I put together a spreadsheet of courses, and later in my progress, I want to clean it up and host it. (Right now, I’m still working through what resources I find useful.)
